Some of the biggest sugar refineries in the world were located in Philadelphia in the late 19th and early 20th century, with the Franklin Sugar Refinery, one of the largest in the world, controlling 90 percent of America’s sugar at one point. In the 1800's, many sugar suppliers began to package their product in cotton sacks. This cut down on the need for bulky wooden barrels. These sacks were tightly woven bags and were later converted into useful items that could be utilized around the home such as clothing, toys, quilts, curtains, pillowcases, undergarments, cloth diapers, dish towels and much more. Manufacturers saw this and acknowledged that consumers were utilizing their packaging, and began labeling their sacks with inks that were washable, which allowed them to be made into anything and everything.

This vintage towel bag from the Franklin Sugar Refining Company originally held 100 lbs of fine granulated sugar. If properly framed and mounted it would make an interesting piece of wall decor. Use your sewing skills to create an interesting throw pillow. Or stick with tradition and create some vintage tea towels for your kitchen.
